Child Custody and Visitation

Effective New Jersey Child Custody Lawyers

Children involved in the dissolution of a marriage are affected by the divorce as much as their parents are. However, they have much less control. At Aretsky & Aretsky, located in Ridgewood, New Jersey, we work closely with parents to help create conditions under which child custody and visitation decisions are focused on the best interests of their children.

Compassionate Child Custody Attorneys

Children's issues are some of the most emotionally charged in a divorce. Child custody involves a number of decisions, where the child will live, visitation schedules, and the amount of child support that will be paid. Courts generally prefer that both parents remain involved in a child's life. So, while a child may live with one parent, the other parent is almost always granted visitation rights or parenting time.

While joint or shared custody is preferred, child custody agreements can take several forms:

  • Sole Legal Custody - This grants one parent the authority to make all decision related to the child's welfare, including health, religion, and education.
  • Joint or Shared Legal Custody - This gives both parents the right to make decisions about the child. When residential custody is shared, a child spends time with both parents according to a parenting schedule.
  • Sole Physical Custody - This grants one parent total physical custody of a child. The other parent may or may not have visitation rights, but even if they are granted, they are usually supervised.

We work closely with our clients to understand their situation and the situation of their spouse, to work toward a custody agreement that is in the best interest of their children.
